How do I set additional settings in a Turnitin assignment?
You will learn about additional settings for a Turnitin assignment. This is the Turnitin Standard assignment.
After you have created a Turnitin assignment in Canvas, follow these steps to set additional settings.
3. Assignment details.
You can review and change instructions (1), start date (2), feedback date (3), and max points (4).
Note: The Title and due date will need to be changed by using the Edit Assignment Settings button in the Canvas Assignment just before the Turnitin interface loads.
4. Template.
If you have a template for your assignment you may upload it here. Click on "Upload File" to attached your template. The text within the template will be excluded from Similarity Reports.
5. Grading and feedback settings.
Click to expand "Grading and feedback settings" section.
Within the Rubric option, you can manage rubrics for grading your assignment. Click on Attach Rubric to set up your own rubric, use one shared by others at CSUF or one created by Turnitin. You can also launch the Rubric Manager here to select and modify other rubrics. If you have a library of existing rubrics you may Import these rubrics into "My Rubrics".
Note: If you have rubrics in the previous version of Turnitin, they will not be available for import. We updated to version LTI 1.3 in summer 2026.
6. Submission settings.
Click to expand the "Submission settings" section.
- Put a check mark if you will accept late submissions passed due date. These submissions will be accepted but the time will indicate that they were submitted late.
- Put a check mark if you want to allow the students to resubmit their papers until due date. Students can make up to three submissions to the assignment within 24 hours of their first submission or first re-submission.
- Put a check mark if you want to allow submission of any file type. Allowing any file type will also include file types that Turnitin cannot analyze.
Tip: For Turnitin to analyze a file, it must have the following:
- Be less than 100 MB
- Be less than 800 pages
- Have a minimum of 20 words
- Have one of these file types: doc, docx, wpd, html, pdf, ps, txt, rtf, odt, pptx, hwp, hwpx, google doc
- Have machine-readable/selectable text (not an image or scanned PDF)
- Must not be password-protected/encrypted
7. Report settings
Click to expand the report settings.
If submissions are added to a repository
- Generate reports immediately - with this setting, the Similarity Report for each submission will be generated immediately without comparison to other submissions within the assignment. On the assignment due date, a new Similarity report and collusion check will be run. This process indexes all submissions to the selected repository and compares them to each other. As a result of this refresh, some similarity scores may change.
- Generate reports on due date - all submissions will enter the repository on the due date and will be used for comparison against each other.
Submissions are not stored in a repository - the submissions within an assignment cannot be used for comparison against each other, so the time of report generation has no effect on the similarity score.
