How do I create an in-person test in TestFlex?
You will learn how to create an in-person test in Scantron TestFlex.
TestFlex offers two types of in-person tests: a stand alone test for which you will use TestFlex to create the answer sheet and do the grading. The other type is for when you want to use TestFlex to create your answer sheet and you want to pass back the grades to your course in Canvas.
Follow these steps after you have imported your course from Canvas and after you have created an Assignment in Canvas which has the appropriate number of points, is set for Manual grading, and set for no submission under the Submission Type.
1. Click on the name of the course.
2. Click on Test.
3. Select Import from Canvas.
Tip: You have two options here. You can import a test (Assignment) from Canvas if you want to report the grades back to your Canvas course. Or, you can select Create Using Test Designer. You should make this decision before you start designing the test and the answer sheet/key.
Before you reach this step, if you are going to import an Assignment from Canvas, you should first create that Assignment in Canvas.
4. Click on the dropdown menu to see a list of Assignments and Quizzes in your Canvas course.
5. Select the desired Assignment.
6. Click on Link and Sync.
7. Click on the Use an existing answer sheet design.
Tip: To learn how to design your own answer sheet, rather than a standard bubble sheet, review the guides on doing that. For example, if you plan to have the students solve some math problems but don't want to have them choose an answer already given, you will need to design your own test that allows students to bubble in numbers and equations. If you want to have an Open Response question, you will need to select Design from scratch.
8. Use the dropdown menu to select the answer sheet with the desired number of questions.
9. Click on Continue.
10. The preview of the answer sheet appears to the right.
Tip: As you make changes to the answer sheet, the preview will reflect those changes.
11. Now, we need to make some changes to the standard answer sheet, so click on Edit.
Most importantly, we need to change the Student ID from 5 digits to 9 digits, as our CWIDs are 9 digits.
Note: If you don't change the Student ID to 9 digits, you will have to manually match every answer sheet to each student after uploading them.
12. Click on 'Yes, require students to bubble-in their ID on the test'.
Many professors use Scantron forms because they have a lot of students, so selecting to have the students bubble in their own CWID makes sense. However, if you have only a small number of students, then consider having the student name printed on the answer sheets.
13. Click on the STUDENT ID tab.
14. Using the dropdown menu, select 9 Characters.
15. Click on Save Design Settings.
Read these guides to learn about some of the different options for test design:
16. Use the Add menu to customize your answer sheet.
17. Click on Finished.
18. Follow this guide to get started on the answer key.
Be sure to wait until you have finished your test design before starting on the answer key because if you later want to change the answer sheet design, you will likely need to delete the key and then edit the design, and create a new key.
For example, if you want to have multiple Answer sheets, like Version A, Version B, etc., you should make those first.
After you have created your Answer Key, you are now ready to Distribute your test to your students.
