How do I get started with CourseKata?

You will learn the first steps in getting started with using CourseKata in your Canvas course.

1. Contact a representative at CourseKata.

Use [email protected] if you do not already have a contact person and ask for an instructor account. Be sure to use your CSUF email address. Also, provide your department and the name of the CourseKata course you want to use.

Once you have your instructor account, you need to set up your CourseKata class and connect it to your Canvas course.

2. Create the CourseKata class.

Follow these steps to create your CourseKata class, select your textbook and obtain the CourseKata course package.

2.1. Go to your Canvas course and copy the URL.

2.2. Go to https://app.coursekata.org/ and log in.

Use the login information you received in Step 1.

2.3. Click on New Class.

2.5. Type a name for the course.

The Type and Institution fields should already be filled out.

2.6. Your department name should already be filled out as well as the course name.

The course name is set by the CourseKata representative when you communicate via email.

2.7. Select the textbook for your course.

2.8. Select this is a real class.

Now, you will see several additional fields to fill out including the dates, class size, etc.

2.9. Click on Create Class

2.10. Paste the URL from your Canvas course.

2.11. Click on Next Step.

2.12. Click on the HERE button to download the Canvas course cartridge.

3. Install the course cartridge.

Follow these steps once the IMSCC file has downloaded from CourseKata.

3.1. Returning to your Canvas course, click on Import Existing Content.

3.2. Use the dropdown to select Canvas Course Export Package.

3.4. In the Downloads folder, select the file ending with ".imscc".

3.5. Click on Open.

3.6. Click on Select specific content.

3.7. Click on Add to Import Queue.

3.8. Click on Select content.

3.9. Tick the Modules checkbox.

3.10. Click on Select Content.

3.11. Note that there will be a lot of issues found, ignore those.

3.13. Returning to the CourseKata page, click on Next Step.

4. Verify that the connection between Canvas and CourseKata is working.

4.2. Enter your CourseKata login credentials and click on Log in.

4.3. Click on Select Class.

Note: If your course in CourseKata is not listed, then you have likely made a mistake and may need to start over again. If you get stuck, contact [email protected].
