How do I use the Discussion Summary tool in Discussions?

You will learn how to use the Discussion Summary tool in your course in Canvas. This tool is only visible and usable to the course instructor or Canvas Admin. Students cannot see it and cannot access it.

Canvas is simply supplying an additional tool to save instructors a little time and effort. Some instructors find it quite useful in drafting an Announcement to summarize a discussion topic for their students.

1. Go to your course discussion after students have already posted and click on Open Summary.

Open Summary

2. Type a topic in the Topics to focus on field (1); otherwise, click on Summarize (2).

If you have a large group of students in your discussion, you may want to focus on a sub-topic. Experiment and see which option gives you better results.

3. An AI summary is generated.

If you find this information to be useful, edit it for a course announcement or to post in the discussion or to use as you desire. It is simply a tool that you may use if you want to. Note that you can only use this tool 25 times a day.
