How Do I Add a Badge to My Canvas Course? [Step 4]

In this guide, we will show you how to insert your newly created badge into your Canvas course. We'll show you how you can issue the badges to your students either automatically or manually.

Alert: You must upload your badge to your Canvas Badges (Badgr) account BEFORE you can add badges to your Canvas courses. Please refer to this guide on how you can upload your badge to your Canvas Badges account: How do I upload my newly created badge to my Canvas Badges account?

1. Log into your Canvas course

2. Click on the "Badges" tab in the Course Navigation Menu

Note: The Course Navigation Menu is the area that displays Home, Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, etc.

What if I cannot find "Badges" on my Course Navigation Menu?

Tip: If you do not see "Badges" on your Course Navigation Menu, then you will have to move it from the hidden tabs section to the visible tabs section in the course settings.

A.) Scroll to the bottom of the Course Navigation Menu and click on "Settings"

B.) Click on "Navigation"

C.) Scroll down to find the "Badges" block

Note: Since the "Badges" tab is hidden from your Course Navigation Menu, it will be found in the "Drag items here to hide them from students" section.

The list of visible tabs in your Course Navigation Menu is under the "Drag and drop items to reorder them in the course navigation" section.

D.) Click on the 3 vertical dots to the very right of the "Badges" block and then click on "Enable"

Tip: You can also click on the Badges block and drag it to the enable/visible section ("Drag and drop items to reorder them in the course navigation").

E.) You will now see the "Badges" block in the "Drag and drop items to reorder them in the course navigation" section

Note: This above section of blocks/tabs will be visible on the Course Navigation Menu.

F.) Scroll down to the bottom and click on the dark blue "Save" button

Alert: If you do not click on "Save" after enabling "Badges," then the Badges tab will remain hidden. You must click on "Save" to ensure the changes are saved and that the Badges tab will be visible.

G.) "Badges" can now be located on your Course Navigation Menu

Note: Depending on where you placed the Badges block in the Navigation Settings, that will determine the location of the Badges tab. You may need to scroll down on the Course Navigation Menu.

In this example, we enabled Badges to the very bottom of the visible tables list. So we must scroll down.

3. Click on the "Upgrade course" button

4. After upgrading, you will receive a message indicating that the upgrade is complete

5. Refresh the page to view the new interface

Tip: You may also click on the Badges tab on the Course Navigation Menu to refresh the page, instead of clicking on the refresh browser button.

6. Enter your @fullerton.edu email address, then click on "Next"

Alert: If you have not created a Canvas Badges account, then you won't be able to access this feature. You must create an account first. Please visit this guide on how you can create a Canvas Badges account: How Do I Create a Canvas Badges Account?

7. Check your email inbox for a verification code and enter it on the Canvas Badges page in your course.

8. Click on "Next" after you fill in the boxes

9. Select which issuer account you want to use

10. Your issuer account should now be linked to the course

Note: To double-check and see which badge is linked to your course, you need to:

  1. Click on "Setup"
  2. Click on "Details"

11. Now you must add the badge

  1. Click on "Badges." It should be next to "Pathways" "Learners" "Staff" and "Details"
  2. Click on the blue "Add badge" button

12. Choose a badge

  1. Click on the drop-down menu arrow
  2. Select the desired badge that you want to import into the course

13. Select how the badge will be awarded: Automatically (Canvas Integration) or Manually?

  • Automatically (Canvas Integration): Automatically award when learners meet criteria on items in your Canvas course.
  • Manually: Track a badge that is awarded outside this group, by a pathway, or manually by staff within the group.
