How do I use the Canvas YouTube Migration tool in a way, so that I can still have YouTube captions?
You will learn how to use the YouTube video migration tool and how to enable existing YouTube captions to continue to work within Studio and in your course.
Follow these steps if your video is marked as "Public". If it is marked as "Unlisted", the skip ahead to the next section first. Then, return to this section.
1. Scroll down and click on YouTube Migration.

2. Click on scan Course.

3. You should now see a list of all of your embedded YouTube videos.

4. Click on Review.

5. Click on Convert.

6. Click on Close.

7. Navigate to your video to ensure it plays.
Tip: This YouTube video has captions within Studio because the video in YouTube is set to "public".

If your video is in a Classic Quiz question, follow the same process, but afterward, navigate to your quiz.
If the video is in a Question Bank, but not assigned to a quiz, you don't need any further steps.

1. In the quiz, click on Save It Now.

2. The video in the quiz should now be good to go.
Tip: This process is the same whether the video is in the instructions part of the quiz or within a question that is in the quiz.

A bit of finagling may be required to ensure that you don't lose the YouTube-based captions when migrating to Canvas Studio.
PUBLIC: If the YouTube video is set to "Public", then the captions should be embedded into Studio along with the video. You don't need to follow either of these steps below.
UNLISTED: If the YouTube video is set to "Unlisted", then the captions will likely not be embedded into Studio along with the video. However, you can follow these steps as a workaround.
You must be the owner of the video (meaning it is in your YouTube account), in order to use either of the two methods outlined below.
Follow these steps to change the Unlisted video to Public. You can then use the migration tool to convert the video and obtain the captions, then change the video back to Unlisted.
Tip: If you want to edit the captions, then use Method 2 instead.
1. Login to your YouTube account and click on your profile icon.
This can be your CSUF account or your personal account. It doesn't matter as long as the video is in your YouTube account.

2. Select YouTube Studio.

3. Click on Content.

4. Locate your video and click on Unlisted.

5. Select Public.

6. Click on Publish.

7. Navigate to your course and click on the YouTube Migration navigation item.

8. Click on Scan Course.

9. Click on Review.

10. Click on Convert.

11. Click on Close.

12. Navigate to the video, play it, and you will notice that it has captions.

13. Return to the video in YouTube Studio, and change it back to Unlisted.

14. Navigate back to your video. Refresh the page and see that the video still has captions.

Note that you will not be able to edit the YouTube captions in Studio. You can, however, add a captions file later if desired, or you can edit the captions in YouTube.

Follow these steps to download the subtitles for the YouTube video and then upload them to your video in Canvas Studio.
Follow these steps after you have migrated your video to Canvas Studio, or if you want to edit the captions to make them more accurate.
Tip: This is the only way to edit the captions for the videos in Canvas Studio.
1. In your YouTube Studio, click on Subtitles.

2. Click on the title of the video.

3. Hover over Published to have the menu appear.
Tip: If you have edited the captions, then you can certainly select those instead of the auto-generated captions. Choose the best captions for your video.

4. Click on the Three Dots menu.

5. Click on the right arrow.

6. Select .srt.

7. Locate your video in Canvas Studio and click on the video.
Tip: Your video will be located within the Course Collection which has the same name as your Canvas course, so in this case, the name of my course is "Canvas Studio". Your Course Collection will be named after your course.

8. Click on the Captions tab.

9. Click on Upload.

10. Use the dropdown menu to select English.

11. Click on Upload.

12. Double-click the captions file (it should be in your Downloads folder).

13. Edit as desired.

14. Click on Close.

15. This video in the course now has captions available.
